Travel Insurance 101

What do you think of when you hear the term travel insurance? I suspect two things come to mind: coverage for medical while out of the country and/or reimbursement for the cost of a trip if you must cancel due to illness. And you are right. Travel insurance can cover both of these things. You may also think it is expensive. I would like to argue otherwise.

First, even the most basic plan (whether you decide to cover trip cancellation or not) includes $10,000 medical expense, $100,000 emergency evacuation & repatriation of remains, $500 trip interruption (return air if you must come home in the middle of a trip due to an emergency at home), $500 in baggage & personal effects loss, and $100 in baggage delay (if you need to buy things because your bag didn’t make it with you on your flight).

In addition to these basics, which most people are unaware and under-utilize, you get Travel Assistance in the form of 24-hour travel counseling for emergency or last-minute travel changes; pre-trip travel advice re: passport, visa, vaccine requirements, embassy contact, and much more; emergency medical assistance in locating English-speaking medical specialists or facilities and assistance with medical evacuations anywhere in the world; e-mail or phone message relay to family, friends, and business associates; emergency cash transfer assistance; assistance with replacing lost travel documents, such as tickets, passport, or visa; assistance in locating lost or stolen baggage and personal effects; and telephone interpretation for medical or legal emergencies.

If you choose not to cover trip cancellation, you get all of the above for less than $100 – much less if you are under the age of 80; less than half if you are under the age of 70.

Even if you do include trip cancellation, you are looking at all of this, plus reimbursement of prepaid non-refundable trip costs, for between 2% and 5% of the trip cost (depending on your age). In my opinion, a bargain for the peace of mind provided.

I now exclusively sell Travel Guard Insurance, the best in the industry. I would be happy to explain the coverage in detail. Give me a call at 702-294-4365.
