Artist Profile -
Shirley was born and raised in Rhode Island and showed an interest in art at an early age. At age 10, she began attending classes for young people at the Rhode Island School of Design!
|Though accepted as a matriculating student in their college program, her focus changed to the field of social service and she received a B.A. in Sociology from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI.
While working as a social worker, she continued her studies in art, taking classes in watercolor with Geore Shedd, Ruth Wynn and Carlton Plummer. Her work with children and young adults provoked an interest in portraiture and she studied pastel portraiture with Constance Pratt and Joseph Coletta, and workshops with Robet Cormier and Paul Leveille.
Shirley entered a watercolor figure study in the Artist’s Magazine’s 1991 Art Competition in the portrait category and was selected as a finalist. Soon after that she joined the New England Watercolor Society.
In 2002 she left the East Coast to move to Las Vegas to be closer to her two daughters and fulfill a desire to paint the magnificent southwestern landscape.
|She is a signature member of the Nevada Watercolor Society and a member of the Boulder City Art Guild. Her work in the Boulder City Art Gallery has garnered a number of ribbon awards including the Elaine McFadden Memorial Award for Merit, which is a peer award by vote of the members of the Gallery. She has won the Alice Davis Memorial Award many times. This award is by vote of the visiting guests to the Gallery.
