Lady Eagles Flag Football: Repeat State Champs?
by Jim Konst

The Lady Eagles Flag Football team captured the State Championship last year with an undefeated 22-0 record. They are undefeated as of the writing of this article, and their goal is to repeat as the 2016 NIAA State Champs.

"The girls are doing great," Head Coach Chris Morelli said. "We are focused and driven, and the girls want to go all the way and repeat as the State Champs!" Coach Morelli started the flag football program four years ago, when CCSD first made it a sport. He has three talented young ladies who are seniors, who started the team with him: Jeanne Carmell, Paige Buettner and Makenzy Waldo (featured on the cover). "I loved starting the flag football program here at Boulder," Morelli added.

Morelli's varsity starters on offense for the 2015-2016 season are: Aimee Finn at center; Paige Buettner at running back; Jeanne Carmell at quarterback; and Oshanna Remy, Tarah Cox, Makenzy Waldo and Kenadee Bailey at wide receiver.

"This receiving corp. is the best I've ever seen," Coach Morelli noted. "They are probably the best in the state, and it doesn't hurt having the best quarterback in the state in Jeanne Carmell!"

Carmell earned the NIAA Flag Football Most Valuable Player Award for the league and the state in 2015, and the Lady Eagles had six players selected for the 2015 NIAA Flag Football All-Star Team. That included Carmell, Buettner and Remy from this year's squad.

The defensive starters this year are: Emma Jeppsen and Remy at outside linebacker, Bailey at middle linebacker, Buettner at rusher, Carmell and Waldo at cornerback and Cox at safety.

The other members of the 2016 BCHS varsity flag football team are: London Ayers, Alexus Pohe, Brook Reed, Samantha Lawrence, Rachel Whitman, Evelin Robinson and Skyler MckKay.

"The girls are so focused and dedicated," Coach Morelli said, "they would call me over the winter break and ask if we could have some extra practices to get ready for the bulk of our season."

Sandra Cameron coaches the junior varsity squad, and her team is made up of: Jillian Gentz, Nicole Valle, Catherine Dunagan, Giavana Frias, Ana Erickson, Hannah Barth, Gillian Dunford, Halley Faiola, Jessica Perrett and Nikki Meleo.

Kevin Ruth is the freshmen coach. Megan Hartung, Erin Cowley, Shantell Keckler, Briaan Pickens, Halley Jacklson, Karli Parsons, Cheyenne Keckler, Kaitlin Larkin, Geneva Jeffreys, Pricillia Rodriguez, Bryanna Daughetry, Nichole Del Rio and Caitlyn Crowe are the members of the freshmen squad.

This is the fourth year girl's flag football has been offered by CCSD, and from the start, our girls have loved it. The sport has become so popular, that more girls came out for flag football than basketball!

In the first year of their existence, the Lady Eagles made it to the playoffs. In their second year, they made it undefeated to the State Championship Game, but lost a close one at the end of the game to finish with a 20-1 record. Last year, they handily won the State Championship with a 22-0 record, and everyone hopes to repeat that performance again!

The Lady Eagles love seven on seven flag football, and have worked hard in the off-season to become the dominant team in their division again.

From a spectator and fan point of view, I've really come to enjoy watching our Lady Eagles Flag Football team play at home. They are aggressive, athletic and hard hitting; all the things I look for in my basketball players at Garrett!

The Lady Eagles have four league games in February. The home games are Chaparral on the 3rd and Del Sol on the 11th. The junior varsity games are at 3:30pm, the varsity starts at 4:30pm, and the freshmen games kickoff at 6pm. Why not come out and cheer on your favorite flag football players at the two remaining home games. I guarantee you'll enjoy all the action and excitement!

The CCSD Regional Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals are February 16th through 18th. The Regional Championship game is the 22nd, and the State Championship game is the 23rd.

"This team is even better than last year's State Championship team," Coach Morelli added.

Congratulations to all the members of the flag football team. We are very proud of you and look forward to you repeating as the State Champs!
