Pickleball Debut in Boulder City

I know, I know, most of you are probably asking, "What in the world is Pickleball?" According to the United States of America Pickleball Association, "It is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. This fun sport combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong."

So, how do you combine all these elements into one sport? The paddle is bigger than a ping-pong paddle and smaller than a tennis racquet with a short handle. The game does not require nearly as much running as tennis, so it is not as taxing on the body, yet it incorporates many tennis strategies and strokes. Compared to ping-pong, it's more of a workout yet incorporates ping-pong strategies and strokes as well. Now to make it all a bit more interesting, the ball has holes in it like a wiffle ball. All of this is tied up in a package that takes place on a court the size of a badminton court. A little spin here, a strategically placed ball there, and there you have it, Pickleball.

The Recreation Department is holding two workshops to introduce the community to Pickleball. They will be held on Tuesday, May 13th and Saturday, May 17th at 9am at ABC Park on the basketball court on the backside of the property. Paddles and balls will be provided along with basic instruction. Beginning May 17th, equipment will be available to check out at the Fitness Center and nets will be available at the ABC Park court. The net will be permanently assembled, however players will need to move it to the location outlined on the court and secure it back at the fence when done.

If you're interested in getting involved in this game and just can't wait until the workshops, please call the Recreation Department at (702) 293-9256 and have your name put on the Pickleball interest list and we'll give you a call when a group is getting together. You can come watch the game or join the group as opportunity allows. This game really is a blast so don't miss out on the fun.
