Spring Has Sprung

It’s that time of year already, time to garden! And what better place than beautiful Boulder City! Although the calendar doesn’t list Spring for a few more weeks, the weather’s been beautiful for the majority of our winter. And that’s given us the opportunity to get an early start on seeds and plantings. One of these early starts is the Heirloom Hollyhock Project.

The hollyhock is the official flower of Boulder City, and even has its own day: May 8th. Brought to our town during the building of the dam by one of our notable 31’ers, Grandma Pickett, the hollyhocks grown today are related to the originals. By collecting the seeds from the plant after the flowers have bloomed, the next generation is started and carries the heritage of the hollyhock along.

Each year, the 31’ers Educational Outreach grows and plants hundreds of hollyhocks. A project this big is made possible through community volunteers, so if you’re interested in joining the Hollyhock Brigade, you can get more information at The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum (located in The Boulder Dam Hotel).

For the veggie gardeners, it’s cool season crop time. Broccoli, cauliflower, greens, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, and many more; check your planting guide for a complete listing. I’ve been visiting with local gardeners to see who’s planting what this season. Herbs are also being started, and I’m adding Mojave natives and ornamentals to spice up the garden rows. Cool season flowers in bloom include snapdragons, pansies, stock, violas, primrose, and cyclamen, just to name a few. The plant nurseries are plenty full for the picking, and your imagination can be the limit. Themed gardens are a great way to express your gardening creativity. Perhaps a sensory garden with wonderful textures and fragrances or a hummingbird or butterfly garden to entice visitors to your garden spot.

Be on the lookout for plant sales and gardening events, there will be plenty. And as always, share your ideas from the garden.

Happy Spring!
