Portrait Artist - Maribeth McLay

The haunting blue eyes of a child, a timid smile of a waif, a ranch hand enjoying a morning “cup of joe” are all subject matter for the discerning artistic eye of Maribeth McLay.

Born and raised the daughter of a Wisconsin dairy farmer, Maribeth graduated from college with a degree in Kindergarten-Primary Education. She moved to Las Vegas, taught school in the Vegas area for a number of years, then moved to Boulder City with her husband Ivan and three children in 1976. She became the director of a pre-school in Boulder City, retiring in 1994.

The energetic, outgoing lady wanted an active retirement. She was persuaded by a friend to take an art class and fell in love with oil painting. Maribeth has taken lessons through the Boulder City Recreation Department workshops, studied with several noted local artists (Jim McLean, Tamara Geddes and Steven Lesnick), and is presently working in a painting/critique group sponsored by the Boulder City Art Guild.

She has done some commission work, but prefers to select the subjects and themes for her paintings. She finds the world of children challenging and very rewarding to paint, although a good adult character study is an occasional stimulating diversion.

Ms. McLay loves the work of the old “masters.” The stories depicted by artists such as Peter Paul Rubin, Michael Angelo and Jans Vermeer have inspired her. She strives to create the emotions as painted by the great painters of the past in the artwork she lovingly calls her “hobby” and “part of her family”. Examples of her work are hung at the Boulder City Art Gallery, the B.C. Chamber of Commerce Building and the City Hall.

When she isn’t painting, the cheerful, gregarious Maribeth may be found greeting newcomers at the Chamber of Commerce or performing community services through Friends of the Arts or Beta Sigma Phi.
