Rotary Youth Leadership Awards 2011

I have had the honor of serving a second term as the District 5,300 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Chairperson.

RYLA, for those that are not familiar with the program, is a three-day action-packed leadership camp, which takes place in Idyllwild California.

Attendees, 288 high school juniors, from Caliente to East Los Angeles will be exposed to a variety of leadership principles.

Throughout RYLA these young adults will be exposed to a variety of leadership labs ranging from effective communication, situational ethics, peer pressure as well as experiencing and hopefully gaining an appreciation for individual differences. Students will be debriefed after each exercise where they discuss how to effectively overcome the challenges presented.

Our community should find comfort in the fact that we will have ten outstanding students participating in this program, which are being sponsored both Rotary Clubs. Lee McDonald of our Sunrise Rotary and High School Principal Ann Nelson, President-elect of the Rotary Club of Boulder City had the arduous task of choosing our participants.

I find extreme value knowing that we have such great kids in Boulder City; the future is indeed bright as we prepare to pass the torch to future generations.

I am also immensely pleased at the level of care and support the parents of these RLYA participants demonstrate daily. I have been privileged to witness many of these parents first hand as they interact with their children.

I have no doubt there is a direct correlation between GREAT PARENTS and GREAT KIDS, both of which make our job at the police department much easier.
