Books to Film

Watched any good books lately?  There are no typos in that question,  I asked exactly what I intended. We have a number of movies and mini-series in our DVD collection that are based on books. Below I’ve listed a few of the books-made-into-film that you might enjoy.

The Brother Cadfael Mysteries (books by Ellis Peters) Starring Sir Derik Jacobi as the title character, this series is set in the 12th century abbey of Shrewsberry, Brother Cadfael is a retired Crusader who is now a humble monk who uses his knowledge of the world and his skills as a botanist to solve mysteries. If you are a fan of today’s CSI series, you will probably like Brother Cadfael.

No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (books by Alexander McCall Smith) Mma Precious Ramotswe opens the first and only female-owned detective-agency in Botswana.  Produced by BBC & HBO and filmed in Africa. Stars Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose from Dreamgirls.

The Sackets (Books by Louis L’amour) Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck lead the cast in this adaptation of the L’Amour series telling the story of the Sacket Brothers as they wind their way across the Midwest prairies. (This is just one of the L’Amour titles we own.)

Nero Wolfe (books by Rex Stout) Before he began using his leverage, Timothy Hutton played good natured sidekick, Archie Goodwin, to Maury Chakin’s Nero Wolfe.  If you enjoy a good story, you will enjoy this wonderful collection of crime, gourmet feasts, orchids and femme fatales.

All Creatures Great and Small (books by James Herriot) Set in Yorkshire in the 1930s, 40s & 50s, this is not only the tale of a country veterinarian filled with animal stories, but a collection of tales about the growth and changes of an entire community.

Sherlock Holmes (books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) We have several DVDs of these stories with the title character played by different actors including Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett and Ronald Howard.

The next time you are looking for something to watch on TV, you might try stopping by the library to pick up something by one of your favorite authors.
