Electronic Books

I’ve been getting requests for information about Electronic Books (E-Books) and sources we offer for free E-Books. E-Books are books that can be read on electronic devices such as your computer and similar equipment.

The library offers free e-books that you can download at no charge through Overdrive, the same company that we use for downloadable audio books. To find our connection to Overdrive, go to our Online Catalog. You will see a gray box on the page that says Overdrive. Click on that box, and you will be ready to enter the world of Overdrive. For more information on accessing these files, I recommend going through the offered tutorials.

Overdrive downloadable E-Books are DRM-protected Adobe(R) EPUB & PDF files, and are compatible with these operating systems:

Windows(R) Desktop, laptop and netbook computers with one of the following operating systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Mac(R) desktop and laptop computers with one of the following operating Systems: Mac OS X v10.6, Mac OS X v10.5, and Mac OS X v10.4.10.

Overdrive downloadable E-Books are also compatible with the following electronic devices:

Barnes & Noble NOOK(TM): 3G+Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi, Color, Kobo(TM) eReader and Literati(TM) Readerm, Pandigital (R) Novel, Sony Reader Daily Edition(TM): PRS-950SC and PRS-900BC, Sony Reader Pocket Edition(TM): PRS-300SC and PRS-350SC, Sony Reader(TM): PRS-505 and PRS-700, Sony Reader Touch Edition (TM): Prs-600BC and PRS-650BC.

iPhone and Android just announced that they have released applications that will allow users to use Overdrive files as well!

At this time, the Amazon(R) Kindle, Amazon(R) Kindle DX, and the Apple(R) iPad are not compatible with Overdrive files. However, technology changes every day, so you never know when that may change. The Overdrive site offers a full list of equipment that supports their files, as well as lists of incompatible devices.
