Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader

National Clean Energy Summit
This month, Nevada will once again host the National Clean Energy Summit.  This year’s Summit, the 3rd we have held in Nevada, will examine ways that government and industry leaders can partner to invest in clean energy job creation.

Nevada’s emerging clean energy economy will benefit from this effort through connecting workers and investors to help build new industries with jobs that can’t be outsourced, diversifying our state’s economy and leading the Silver State toward energy independence. The Summit brings together experts in clean energy and the business community to make Nevada’s clean energy future a reality.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas will once again host the event and join me in hosting the summit along with the Center for American Progress Action Fund.  Among those participating in this year’s summit are: Center for American Progress Action Fund President and CEO John Podesta; Thomas Donohue, President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and T. Boone Pickens. They bring diverse perspectives on the economic possibilities of encouraging, investing and building the nation’s green energy infrastructure.  Renewable energy projects in Nevada have already put hundreds to work in spite of this tough economy.

In the few years that I have hosted the summit, progress has been made at the state and federal level to put Nevada on the map as a clean energy leader. Hundreds of jobs have been created and thousands more will come as new generation, storage and transmission projects are approved and built.  Renewable energy companies like Amonix, Solar Reserve and A-Power have begun new ventures that will put Nevadans back to work.

Nevada has received millions of dollars in funding and tax incentives to support the development of solar, wind and geothermal energy projects. The Departments of Energy and Interior are working together to create a Solar Energy Demonstration Zone at the Nevada Test Site.  Just last month the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved plans for the North-South energy transmission line that will move clean energy from Northern Nevada to Southern Nevada where electricity demand is higher, and help us achieve the goal of being a net exporter of clean energy.
