The Youth Library is further divided into sections of books for different ages. The spine label on the book will offer a clue for you to help match up books with the appropriate reading level.
However, the best judge of what your child can handle is YOU.
Board = Board Book. These books are aimed at our youngest patrons, and are generally printed on heavier cardboard stock to help them withstand the use of those little hands and mouths.
P = Easy Picture Books. These books are wonderful for sharing with toddlers all the way up through kids in the 5th grade.
K-1 = A section of early readers aimed at helping the newest readers in Kindergarten and 1st grade develop their new skills.
2-3 = Early chapter books for youth in grades 2 and 3.
J = Juvenile Fiction. Story books aimed at ages 8-13.
JGN = Juvenile Graphic Novels. Some people call these “comic books” but they are more sophisticated than the comics of my youth. Ages 8-13.
J & YA Bio = Biography titles for ages 8-21.
J & YA NF = Information books for ages 8-21.
YA = Young Adult story books for ages 14-21. Some of these books may possibly address sensitive issues and older ideas. They usually contain some advanced vocabulary.
YA GN = Young Adult Graphic Novels. Ages 14-21. Stories are told in a format similar to comic books.
We also offer magazines for young readers and a collection of books for Parents and Teachers.
For advice in choosing reading materials for younger readers, please ask for help from a Librarian at one of our Reference Desks.
