Boulder City Magazine® July 2010 Issue
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader
Boulder City has one of the most exciting Independence Day celebrations in our State. I have had the pleasure of celebrating with Southern Nevadans at the Boulder City Damboree celebration many times. This year, Boulder City will honor those who built Boulder City and Hoover Dam. As we celebrate, let us remember those who build and maintain this nation’s defense by serving in our armed forces.

|Last month we passed the Supplemental Appropriations bill to ensure that our troops serving at home and overseas have the support and resources they need to succeed. This bill provides funding to help our troops mobilize and defend our country while allocating $1 billion to address the increased needs of our troops in Afghanistan. An additional 30,000 troops are needed for the fight against terrorism which is why I worked hard to make sure they have adequate funding for their mission. These young men and women deserve nothing less than our full support.
We must continue to support the men and women who have served and sacrificed. Our country’s veterans served with honor, and on the anniversary of our nation’s independence we pay tribute to the generations of brave veterans who have answered the call to defend our freedom. It was with that in mind that we provided mandatory funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs for disability compensation and ensured that Nevada’s Vietnam veterans experiencing illnesses from Agent Orange exposure will be compensated for health expenses. I also remain committed to the fight to end the bad practice of concurrent receipt that deprives disabled vets from receiving their full retirement and disability benefits. The Senate just passed a bill that temporarily expands the eligibility to receive concurrent receipt of military retired pay and disability compensation paid by the VA to include service members that are retired for disability. This means an additional 77,000 veterans will finally have the benefits they were promised.
During this year’s Damboree celebration we honor the history of Boulder City, our country and those who died to defend it. I will continue to fight for those who fight for us and defend the freedom we celebrate this month.
I wish each of you a happy and safe 4th of July!
