Chautauqua Still Alive
This month I want to feature a subject near and dear to my heart: The Boulder City Chautauqua. I know it’s not a travel topic – unless we consider it a staycation, which is all the rage right now. You know, where you stay at home, or very close to home, yet do something fun and treat it like a vacation.

This year, Chautauqua will be held on Saturday, September 19, in the Boulder Theatre, 1225 Arizona Street. The two separate performances will be at 1:30 pm, featuring the character Zane Grey with musical entertainment by guitarist/vocalist Steve Cottrell; and at 6:30 pm, featuring Annie Oakley and Nevada pioneer woman Mary McNair Mathews, with musical entertainment by Clare Tobler’s Every Wednesday Bluegrass Group. See the ad on page 16 for more details.

Here’s something scary. We almost didn’t have a Chautauqua this year. That’s right. This tradition has been ongoing since 1993, when yours truly worked with the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum and the Nevada Humanities Committee to bring this wonderful event to Boulder City and So. Nevada. It was my baby for the next nine years. (Thus the ‘near and dear to my heart’ reference, above.) It would have been very sad to see it die.

But have no fear, all you Chautauqua groupies and newbies out there. When my fabulous successor, Sara Weber (who had hoped this year to pass the baton to the next generation), heard the news, she and her committee quickly jumped into action and put together a great program, which I am convinced you all will love and support.

This year’s Chautauqua performs another life-saving function, too. All of the profits will be given to the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association. I am sure we can count on YOU to keep this iconic and beloved Boulder City event alive. And by doing so, you will help to keep the Boulder Dam Hotel alive too.

Be a lifesaver! Enjoy your staycation! And I look forward to seeing you there.

Space on the Chamber’s day trip to Tuacahn on Sept. 12 is still available. Get tickets at the Chamber.
