Reid Report
by Senator Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader

Health Insurance Reform
My office has received numerous calls from Nevadans who are counting on health insurance reform in order to get affordable coverage, see their doctor and get the procedures and the medicines they need. We are working hard in the Senate to ensure that we deliver a bill to the President that reduces costs, improves outcomes, and protects choice.

One mother from Boulder City wrote me about her daughter who works at a small business that can’t afford to provide health care for its employees. Insurance companies won’t give this young woman in her 30’s health insurance as an individual because of a preexisting condition. This example, from a neighbor in your community, shows that there are many sides of the problem. There is the small business owner who can’t provide group insurance for his or her employees, and there is the employee who can’t get coverage in the individual market.

We need to stop insurance companies from excluding pre-existing conditions and make insurance more accessible and affordable regardless of your gender, health status, or claims history.  We can do this while protecting everyone’s choice of doctors and plans. If you like the insurance you have, you can keep it.  For those without employer-offered coverage, we’ll provide choices in a competitive marketplace that will offer affordable plans that cover what you need.

Congress has been trying to reform health care for more than a decade. Solutions that make a real difference are long overdue. Health care costs are rising at double the rate of inflation and more than half of the bankruptcies in the United States now are a result of health care bills.
No one can predict when that next accident might come, or when one might get laid off.  We don’t know when we’ll get sick next, or when one of our loved ones will. But we can take the uncertainty and unfairness out of the current system. By making sure that insurance companies act fairly, we level the playing field. Everyone in Boulder City, in Nevada and in our country, should be able to get the health care they need.
