Reference Desk
The next time you stop by the Boulder City Library, take a minute to stop by the Reference Desk. Hopefully you are all familiar with the Circulation Desk, where you check-out and return the materials you borrow from the library. The Reference Desk is that other desk, back by the public internet computers. Beginning in August, that desk will be staffed with someone to help you, our patrons, find what you are looking for.

I know that the Library can seem like an overwhelming place and you may not be sure where to start looking for what you need. That is why we will have someone at the Reference Desk to help you out. That person can help you find a book in our library, or help you place a hold on a book from one of the other libraries in our system. Maybe you don’t know exactly what it is that you need. Well, sometimes one of the most important things a Reference Librarian can do is to help you figure out just what it is that you are looking for.

Please, don’t be afraid to ask your question. Answering questions is what we do. In fact, librarians are trained in library school at “How to answer questions and find information that people are looking for.” I find it fascinating how many different subjects each day I help patrons find books about. And please, don’t think you are “bothering” us when you ask your questions. People often come to the front desk saying, “I don’t mean to bother you, but could you tell me…” That is our job! Go ahead and bother us. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll do our best to find it for you.

The Reference Librarian will also be the most likely to pick up the phone if you call the library. If you call ahead to reserve a computer, or if you are calling to find out if we have a particular book, most often the person picking up the phone will be the person you need to talk to. If you don’t need to talk to the Reference Librarian, the staff member on duty at the Reference Desk will be able to transfer your call to the right person.
