Artist Profile - Rainer R.B. Bertrams
R.B. was born Rainer Bertrams in Dusseldorf, Germany but relocated to Boston, Massachusetts when his parents immigrated to America. R.B. was ten years of age and couldn’t speak a word of English. To say he had a difficult time with this change wouldn’t be any sort of exaggeration. Kids made fun of him in school and he understood nothing except mathematics for a long time.

|He was always interested in art, even at an early age. When he visited his aunt and uncle in Maine, he had his first experience with art. His aunt was a watercolorist and let him play with her paints while visiting.
He painted his first watercolor and gave it to his mother. In fact, he just recently came across it again; she had kept it all these years.
Rainer is a self taught artist... and what an artist he is! He has been into woodcuts and linocuts since 1970. His formal studies were at the University of Massachusetts and resulted in a degree in structural engineering. Most of his engineering work was done in Houston, Texas.
Along the way he started playing the piano and branched into the keyboard, synthesizer and organ. He played professionally with the “Elysian Spring” group. They cut a record titled “Glass Flowers” in 1969. The record has just been re-released and is available at www.rerealease.net and on www.iTunes.com.
R.B. retired and came to Boulder City in 2000 with his partner, and they were married in a drive-through wedding chapel on the Strip. His wife is a pretty Texas cowgirl! They make their home on the golf course but neither of them golf.
R.B. says he considers himself a full-time desperado “because I am always broke!” His life is rich in art, though. He joined the Boulder City Art Guild in 2006, is the Show Director and is currently the Featured Artist in cubicle One in the Gallery.
Drop into the Boulder Dam Hotel to see his beautiful and impressive display of woodcuts, linocuts and a few watercolors in Suite 104, Mezzanine Level. You really must see his work. A small reproduction here would not do his work justice.
