Police Department Sponsors Tournament for Special Olympics
Attention golfing enthusiasts! Mark your calendars for April 19, 2008 when the Police Department is hosting the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament benefiting Special Olympics. The venue for this remarkable event is Boulder Creek Golf Club. This affair was a great success last year, and we expect this year’s tournament to be even better.

Special Olympics Nevada provides recreational sporting opportunities for 3,000 developmentally disabled Nevadans. Fund-raising efforts such as this golf tournament raise funds to ensure these outstanding athletes can participate in Special Olympics at no cost. This tournament is part of a world-wide effort entitled the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR). Events like this, involving police officers around the globe, raised more than $30 million last year, all of which went to Special Olympics. The LETR also promotes awareness, acceptance, and inclusion of people with developmental disabilities. Last year, the Boulder City community, as well as Southern Nevada residents, gladly stepped up and participated honorably for Special Olympics.

Last year’s Golf Tournament, along with a few other events, catapulted your Police Department into a second place finish throughout Nevada for our fundraising efforts. Nevada Department of Public Safety, Northern Command, placed first. Chief Finn and I welcome your continued support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. More importantly, we encourage you to stop by Boulder Creek Golf Club on April 19th and support the Special Olympic Athletes from Boulder City and throughout Southern Nevada. Last year’s event sold out, and we expect the same this year. Register early, we look forward to seeing you at Boulder Creek. You too can then experience the excitement and the pride that radiates from these outstanding athletes as they Inspire Greatness. I wish we all could approach life and the challenges it offers in the manner these athletes do, by focusing on inclusion rather than exclusion.

Another worthy event is scheduled for April 24th. Please join Chief Finn and Officer Jeffrey Grasso as they facilitate the 5th grade DARE GRADUATION. Thank you Officer Grasso for all that you do for our students.

Until next month, stay safe.
