Porter Update

Protecting Our Residents

As you may know, several weeks ago, a runaway chlorine tanker posed a significant hazardous materials threat to our communities in Southern Nevada; I am committed to ensuring that such an event is never repeated.

We must work together to ensure that our citizens are kept safe from hazardous materials whether they be transported by truck or rail. I want to further ensure the residents of Boulder City have the emergency preparedness to deal with the risk of hazardous material traveling through the community.

The issues surrounding the transport of hazardous materials by rail or road are of the utmost importance. On August 29, 2007 a tanker carrying chlorine gas escaped the Arden train yard southwest of Las Vegas. This incident has prompted a review by the Union Pacific Railroad, the Federal Railroad Administration and the Public Health Utilities Commission of Nevada in order to prevent such a high-risk situation from ever repeating itself.

Each year there are tens of thousands of shipments across our nation of hazardous materials. We must work together to ensure that all the proper safeguards are in place to prevent a possible catastrophic release of any of these materials.

In October, I will be hosting a field hearing on the transportation of hazardous materials in Las Vegas. The purpose of this hearing will be to create an open forum in which federal, state and local elected officials as well as representatives from the private industries which utilize and transport hazardous materials can discuss new innovations in rail and road transport.
