The Boulder City Renaissance Faire
by Rochelle Hathaway

The Boulder City High School FBLA, (Future Business Leaders of America) is proud to present the second annual Boulder City Renaissance Faire. The BCHS FBLA members have been working closely with the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce to make this year’s event bigger and better. This years Renaissance Faire is being held at Veterans’ Memorial Park on April 13-14, 2007. The Faire will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The local re-enactment guilds have all joined in to make this faire much larger and to provide a varied example of life during the Renaissance period. The Empire of Chivalry and Steel, Time in History, Black Talon and Adrian Empire are the guilds that will be providing live steel demonstrations. There will also be two interactive booths, archery and boffer weapons for visitors to participate in. The Pirates of Rogue’s Cove will set up camp and demonstrate black powder cannons. Lord Strange’s Company will be demonstrating what life in a Shakespearean acting company would have been like. There also will be demonstrations of rope making, leather work and story telling. Other groups such as The Greenwood Revelers, the Fairy Fold and Hand of Fatima Dance Tribe will add an additional splash of color to this extraordinary event.

The Boulder City Renaissance Faire was started last year by the members of FBLA, Aquila Chapter. With the assistance of the local Renaissance re-enactment guilds: House of Stuart, and Adrian Empire and with the participation of school clubs and organizations the faire was a success. The Boulder City Parents’ Booster Organization and the BCHS Band Parents each had a booth and provided most of the food at last year’s affair. Booths were run by the Science/CPR Club, Creative Writers Club, International Club, Theater Club, and the Interact/National Honors Society Service Clubs. Performances from the Band, Orchestra and Theater classes provided around the clock entertainment. The local Celtic rock band, Killian’s Angels, held a 2 hour concert. The House of Stuart Renaissance Reenactment Guild attended as the royal court last year.

The same groups from last year will be participating again this year. All FBLA members will continue to help organize and run the event. Interact and National Honors Society members will help keep the park area clean and supplied. The Boosters and Band Parents will be providing food, along with the Hip Hop and International clubs. School booths will include: Children’s Games (BCHS Color Guard), Face Painting (Art Club), Hand Fasting (Creative Writer’s Club) and a Petting Zoo (Science Club). In addition, there will be 15 vendors selling authentic clothing, jewelry, leather goods, armor and weapons, perfumes and herbs, and leather books. There will be three other food vendors including kettle corn, funnel cake, roasted corn and other period foods.

This year’s event will have live music during the faire. Killian’s Angels will be returning each afternoon and will be joined by Royal Magick, Silverwind and the Hand of Fatima Dance Tribe performing on stage during the day. The BCHS band students will provide scheduled and roaming entertainment. There will be a raffle for items donated by the vendors as well.

This year’s faire has grown thanks to the participation of the local guilds and groups. It is hoped that this great event will become another permanent Renaissance Faire in the Las Vegas area, and an annual affair in the community of Boulder City. The Veterans’ Memorial Park is the perfect setting and allows us room to grow. We hope the success of this event will lead to more involvement of the local Renaissance enthusiasts and give those close by another event to attend each year.
